Research for music video

For the performance sections of the video, I wanted to create the persona of a rock star with a formal attire to not make the persona too extreme or rebellious but more laid back which will be reflected by the website through interviews and text written about the singer. The plot of the video is a more conventional story following Todorov with a hero’s equilibrium being disrupted and them having to go through a chain of events to fix it and create a new equilibrium. This also follows Propp’s character theory with a protagonist, antagonist, and helper that all push the story. Binary opposition is shown between the protagonist and the antagonist to create conflict and push the story forward. All these narrative theories help to make a conventional story that will be easy to follow without dialogue or sound as all narrative music videos must do. I used body language especially to portray these emotions and story as it is something everyone will understand even without diegetic sound. The performance shots aren’t in the same location and have a completely different setting which is conventional of music videos and also allows for more variety with locations and shots I can get.

I used editing and colour to help convey my story. For example in the scene where the protagonist is looking up at the writing on the wall the scene shifts from a cold temperature to a warm temperature. I also used setting to show the passing of time when the teacher is shouting at the protagonist it cuts multiple times when she is pacing back and forth to show a passing of time as well as keeping it on beat and keeping the music video fast paced and engaging. While not all cuts in the video are on beat I made as many on beat as I could to follow music video conventions.
